The USAID Dakira (Arabic for “memory”) program was officially launched in October 2021. In celebrating the completion of its first year, we are delighted to launch the first Dakira newsletter, which provides a general overview of the program, highlights milestones and activities so far, and calls on the Moroccan people and diaspora to reflect and share their own memories and meanings of “Moroccanness.”

The USAID Dakira Program, implemented by the High Atlas Foundation and its partners, Mimouna Assoication, Fondation Memoires pour l’Avenir, Essaouira Mogador Assoication, Sefrou Association for Multidisciplinary Arts, and Fondation Miftah Essaad, aims to collaboratively develop and pioneer a unique participatory approach to the educational preservation of Morocco’s multicultural history.

The program encourages local communities to capture, preserve, and transmit their collective memories so that they are better equipped to take ownership of the revitalization of their own histories. This introspective, experience-sharing approach among local participants maximizes relationship building, leading to collective actions that improve livelihoods and a deepened discovery of Morocco’s multicultural identity.

ويهدف البرنامج إلى إشراك المجتمعات المحلية في التنقيب عن ذاكرة مجتمعاتها، وحفظ ذلك الموروث، ثم نقله إلى الأجيال الصاعدة لتجهيزها بالآليات والمهارات الضرورية لإعادة إحياء تاريخهم المحلي. وتأتي هذه التجربة، القائمة على الفحص ومشاركة النتائج مع باقي الفعاليات المحلية المشاركة، لتعمل على تعزيز الروابط الجماعية والرقي بها لأبعد الحدود، الأمر الذي سيؤدي لا محالة إلى خلق برامج تساعد على تحسين سبل العيش وتعميق فهم الهوية المغربية متعددة الثقافات

Dakira is dedicated to engaging communities around Morocco in dialogue surrounding Moroccan multiculturalism and conviviality, the collection of memories, histories, and archives, and the mapping of cultural and religious heritage sites.

Over 1,000 people have engaged in this way so far, and we look forward to sharing some of their stories below and in upcoming publications, video capsules, and campaigns.

يكرس برنامج ذاكرة جهوده لإشراك المجتمعات المحلية في جميع أنحاء المغرب في حوار حول التعددية الثقافية والتعايش في المغرب، وجمع ذكريات الماضي والقصص والمحفوظات، ووضع خرائط لمواقع التراث الثقافي والديني.

وقد شارك أزيد من 1000 شخص بهذه الطريقة حتى الآن، ونتطلع إلى مشاركة بعض قصصهم أدناه وفي المنشورات ومقاطع الفيديو والحملات القادمة.

وقد أشرك برنامج ذاكرة حوالي 1500 مؤسسة ونادي للشباب في أنشطة تعليمية واحتفالات بالتراث في خمس جهات بالمغرب

خلال الفترة الممتدة بين أبريل ويونيو فقط، عبّر %96 من التلاميذ عن رغبتهم في الاستمرار في المشاركة في أنشطة نوادي برنامج ذاكرة، كما أفاد %90.26 منهم بزيادة فهمهم للهوية المغربية

وخلال فصل الصيف، نظم برنامج ذاكرة أنشطة ثقافة لاستكشاف الهوية في عدد من المخيمات الصيفية، بما في ذلك بمدينة الصويرة والمنزل بإقليم صفرو

For example, Dakira has held cultural workshops with 284 members of women’s cooperatives on identity discovery, cultural heritage, and local craftship, engaging them to discuss the manifestations of local culture in handicrafts, enhancing economic ties, and developing culturally-based education.

Additionally, last year, 119 tour guides, 147 youth, and 16 Master’s students engaged in courses in Moroccan Jewish heritage and the Hebrew language, an initiative of Association Mimouna in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and L’Institut supérieur international de tourisme de Tanger (ISITT), respectively.

The Dakira team is preparing for a series of trainings to transfer documentation and storytelling skills to community members and civil society organizations (CSOs), beginning in the Souss-Massa and Marrakech-Safi regions.

The main priority attendees expressed focused on the integration of youth in heritage preservation efforts, from providing tailored education for children to building the capacities of young people to train and work in the culture sector. Other top priorities included elevating women as intergenerational gatekeepers of culture and folklore, expressly through oral storytelling and documentation, as well as establishing a radio network dedicated to the dissemination of Moroccan cultural heritage and exchange of ideas and stories across Morocco’s diverse regions and peoples.

Dakira proudly supported the publication of the Spring 2022 edition of the Journal of Heritage and Arts of Southern Morocco, which focused on the heritage of Jewish communities from the Moroccan south.

FMA organized the translation to Arabic and Tifinagh of texts produced between 1956 to 1960 on the interfaith dialogues that took place at Toumliline, enabling Moroccan youth to have enhanced access and to discuss the open debates. These cultural tools will be used in community dialogues planned in Fall 2022.

في إطار برنامج ذاكرة، نظمت مؤسسة الأطلس الكبير خلال شهر مارس وبتعاون مع شركاء محليين ورشة حول الهوية وتمكين النساء بدار الصويري بمدينة الصويرة. صرحت إحدى المشاركات: “كان لعمتي صديقة يهودي تشتغل خياطة. أخبرتني أن صديقتها كانت دائماً تعلم هذه الحرفة للفتيات المسلمات الصغيرات مجاناً. إنها قصة تثلج الصدر وتعكس التضامن والتعايش بين الأديان اللذين ميزا تلك الحقبة”. صورة بعدسة: أمل المنصوري/مؤسسة الأطلس الكبير

خلال مؤتمر عش تجربة ذاكرة، قام مرشد سياحي محلي بجولة بحي الملاح بمدينة مراكش مع مجموعة من المشاركين في المؤتمر. وكان المرشد قد شارك مسبقاً، إلى جانب 177مرشداً آخر من مختلف المدن المغربية، في دروس تعلم اللغة العبرية والتراث اليهودي المغربي من أجل تطوير وتوفير جولات حول التراث اليهودي بالمغرب. وتشرف جمعية ميمونة على تنفيذ الدروس بشراكة مع وزارة السياحة المغربية، وذلك في إطار برنامج ذاكرة
