Across rural Morocco, two-thirds of women cannot read or write; this is twice the rate of urban areas. The national goal to cut illiteracy by 2026 has fallen behind. In farming communities with limited access to schools and resources, this gap passes from one generation to the next.

The High Atlas Foundation is breaking that cycle, one family at a time.

Our family literacy program brings women and their young children into the same learning environment; mothers build reading, writing, and numeracy skills while their children learn alongside them. As women grow more confident, those skills carry home: into how they raise their children, run cooperatives, and engage their communities.

Classes are paired with entrepreneurship training and cooperative development, so education can translate directly into economic independence. And by training women from within their own communities to become teachers, the program keeps knowledge and opportunity local.

$15,000 funds a full year in one community: teacher salaries, learning materials, vocational workshops, and the cooperative visits that connect women to networks beyond their village.

In Morocco's High Atlas Mountains, women possess extraordinary skills in crafting winter clothing but have never been paid for their work. The High Atlas Foundation is partnering with four women-run cooperatives to transform these artisans into business owners. Your contribution purchases locally-made winter clothing for schoolchildren who need it to attend school during harsh mountain winters, creating income for women, enabling education for children, and building sustainable economic futures for isolated communities.

The Eco-Friendly Tree Sacks Program is an innovative initiative that empowers women in rural Morocco through skills training, cooperative development, and environmental action. By producing biodegradable tree sacks as a sustainable alternative to plastic in agriculture, women are generating income, gaining independence, and leading the way in climate-conscious farming.

This program brings together women’s empowerment and environmental sustainability—proving that when women thrive, communities and ecosystems do too.
