A key goal of HAF's summer accredited program – Participatory Development in Practice – with the University of Virginia is to assist students in their translating academic knowledge to the wider public by writing a well-researched newspaper article about a Moroccan development-related topic or theme that will resonate with African, Middle Eastern, and global audiences.

This goal was a serious focus of the 2025 students, to which they dedicated major effort. The outcome of publications of their writing that they achieved is highly impressive, as you can see below.

Furthermore, in order for them to appreciate that their writing as students can be helpful and well-received beyond their UVA courses, students were allowed to revisit a paper they had written in a previous semester and now, for our summer course, they could revise it, adapt it for readers who may not have a background on the global development topic of their papers, and send their written work to publications for their review and release. Through this exercise the students realized that their written work backed by research can result in publications that benefit readers and themselves as students.

HAF’s message: students of the world, adapt your course papers to bear good consequences beyond the classroom and share them with global readers to enhance the human condition topics you write about.

In years past, HAF’s UVA interns have seen similar success in developing skillful pieces of writing to share with larger audiences, culminating in an extensive list. This table shows the articles written by this year’s UVA students that were published in important outlets.
