Growing Together: Discovering the Impact of Local Initiatives in Akrich and Achbarou
A day of discovery, exchange, and inspiration marked our visit with members of the administration of Randolph College to the nursery in Akrich and the Ashbaro Cooperative. These visits offered a valuable opportunity to explore how local initiatives, supported by the High Atlas Foundation (HAF), contribute to economic empowerment, education, and sustainable development in rural communities.
Our first stop was the Akrich nursery, where we learned more about its operations, agricultural production, and future potential. The visit provided insight into how the nursery functions and contributes to the local economy by creating opportunities for community members to generate income. Beyond its agricultural role, the nursery represents an important source of financial support for the community, helping local people strengthen their livelihoods and build a more sustainable future.
We then visited the Achbarou Cooperative, where we discovered another inspiring example of community empowerment. Through their involvement in the cooperative, women have gained opportunities to generate their own income and become more financially independent. This economic empowerment has had a meaningful impact beyond the women themselves, helping families support their children's education and enabling both girls and boys in the village to continue their studies and pursue better opportunities for their future.
Together, these visits highlighted the impact of the High Atlas Foundation in supporting community-led initiatives that create opportunities beyond immediate economic benefits. They also reminded us that sustainable development is made possible not only through projects and resources, but through the perseverance, enthusiasm, and commitment of the people themselves.
What made this day particularly meaningful was discovering how local efforts can transform lives, empower women, and open new doors for future generations. The nursery and the cooperative stand as inspiring examples of what communities can achieve when they have the support and opportunities to grow.
