The High Atlas Foundation’s (HAF) engagement in the Aghbar municipality following the devastating earthquake on 8 September 2023, marks a significant step in the municipality’s journey towards recovery and resilience. HAF’s commitment to Aghbar is not a new endeavor; our continuous work in the area reflects a deep understanding of the local needs and a strong bond with the community. The recent projects focused on water infrastructure, shelter provision, and supporting sustainable, culturally respectful rebuilding efforts are critical components of this ongoing partnership.

Irrigation System & Water Storage Projects

Restoring and improving irrigation systems are essential for agriculture, the backbone of the community economy and way of life. The earthquake severely damaged these systems, disrupting the water supply and, thus, agricultural productivity. By focusing on these areas, HAF aims to restore what was lost and enhance the systems to ensure better resilience against future calamities. The progress in villages like Tanmert, El Makayat, and Widrarne shows a targeted approach, ensuring that each area receives the support it needs based on its specific damages and challenges.

Amidst these efforts, the advancement of water storage facilities marks a significant milestone. "We are on the brink of completing one water tank," revealed by our last field visit, highlighting a crucial step forward in the region's recovery and development plan. This achievement is part of a broader strategy to rehabilitate and construct three additional water tanks, driven by the community's aspiration to utilize these resources for tree planting initiatives. This vision not only aims to restore the agricultural landscape but also to foster environmental sustainability and enhance the local ecosystem.

Shelters Distribution

Offering temporary housing options such as shelters satisfies the pressing demand for the safety and security of earthquake-affected families. Mr. Elaraby stated, “This effort does more than just offer shelter; it restores a sense of normalcy and stability,” which is crucial for the affected people’s emotional health. These makeshift homes link to the larger plan of rebuilding villages sustainably, respecting customary architectural styles, and embracing the hopes and dreams of the local populace. Likewise, since the beginning of January 2024, HAF has built 48 Shelters in two Villages, and this has helped many families emerge from the darkness and the bitter cold. As one of the beneficiaries said, “These shelters planted new hope in our lives and brightened our dreams. The future is not sustainable, but it is a new beginning to build our lives as we want.”

The positive feedback from community members, highlights the significance of HAF’s work in Aghbar Municipality. The residents’ gratitude underscores these projects’ impact on their daily lives and their hopes for the future. The appreciation of the direct involvement and support from the Foundation team also points to the importance of a participatory approach in development work, where the beneficiaries are actively involved in the planning and implementation of the projects.

The journey of rebuilding Aghbar is a testament to the resilience of its people and the power of collaboration between community members and the HAF team. Together, they are laying down the foundation for a future where the community is rebuilt and stronger and more united than ever.
