Aghbar Empowering: Relief and Rebuilding Efforts After the Al Haouz Earthquake
In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Al Haouz province on September 8th, the relief and rebuilding team of the High Atlas Foundation (HAF) embarked on a mission on February 13th to provide much needed assistance to the affected communities. Journeying to the Aghbar municipality, our team set out to distribute essential materials to four villages: Ouidraren, Wizamaren, Tanamert, and Ikkis.
With the harsh winter exacerbating the already challenging conditions faced by those impacted by the earthquake, one of our primary objectives was to provide warmth and comfort to the affected families. To address this, we distributed 20 wood burning stoves to households in need, the stoves were donated to HAF by Polish Humanitarian Action. These stoves will not only help combat the biting cold but also serve as a source of solace amidst the hardships endured.
In addition to the stoves, we also distributed 80 sleeping bags donated by Amazon to ensure that individuals and families have a means to stay warm and protected during the chilly nights. Recognizing the importance of nutritional support, we provided 336 units of food supplements (funded by the GlobalGiving community) to help alleviate food insecurity among the affected population.
Understanding the critical importance of access to clean water, especially in times of crisis, our team also brought along 16 water survival boxes and 6 water filters donated by Rotary International. These vital resources will enable communities to access clean and safe drinking water, mitigating the risk of waterborne illnesses and ensuring the well-being of residents.
During our visit, we also had the opportunity to inspect an ongoing water project funded by Project Hope aimed at benefiting 160 farmers in the community. Assessing the progress of the project, which includes the construction of water tanks and canals, reaffirmed our commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives that empower local communities.
Amidst the distribution efforts and project inspections, we were heartened by the warm hospitality extended to us by the local community. Gathering together over cups of tea, we shared stories, forged connections, and reaffirmed our solidarity in the face of adversity.
As we concluded our distribution trip to Aghbar commune, we left with a sense of fulfillment, knowing that our efforts have made a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by the earthquake. Moving forward, we remain dedicated to continuing our support for communities in need, ensuring that no one is left behind in their time of greatest need.
