Empowering in Agriculture: HAF’s Journey at SIAM 2024
Under the patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the International Agricultural Exhibition in Morocco (SIAM) has gained prestigious recognition. SIAM was inaugurated in 2006 as part of a royal initiative, and past editions of the exhibition had been graced by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Al Hassan. This attention underscores the monarchy's dedication to showcasing and advancing Morocco's agricultural sector through SIAM, aligning with the Green Morocco Plan (PMV). Agriculture, a key economic pillar, is pivotal for rural development, social stability, and securing future generations. SIAM's role in fostering exchanges, connections, and exhibitions is driving the evolution and prosperity of Moroccan agriculture.
The High Atlas Foundation (HAF), in partnership with the National Water and Forest, participated in the SIAM. HAF’s objective is to share and acknowledge our efforts and achievements in furthering sustainable development in Morocco since its founding, 24 years ago. The foundation works on building the capacities of a green future for farming communities, youth, and women’s cooperatives.
HAF’s Visitors
The 16th edition of the SIAM, held in Meknes from April 22 to 28, 2024, focused on the theme, "Climate and agriculture: advocating sustainable and resilient production systems." Representatives and officials from the National Agency for Water and Forests (ANEF) visited HAF’s stand to strengthen the longstanding partnership and showcase over a decade of collaborative efforts. These meetings focused on fostering future collaboration and crafting new strategies aligned with Morocco's 2020-2030 development agenda, aiming to achieve sustainable development goals.
HAF welcomed a diverse array of visitors, spanning different age groups, genders, and partners, to engage in insightful discussions and exchange information regarding HAF's fieldwork throughout Morocco. These visits played a crucial role in deepening the bonds between HAF and local communities, fostering stronger relationships, and creating opportunities for collaborative partnerships. Furthermore, they served as a platform to involve community members in HAF's diverse range of projects and programs, promoting active participation and collective impact in achieving shared goals.
Participation in SIAM’s Activities
The HAF’s representatives participated actively in various international agriculture exhibitions organized by partners throughout the exhibition halls and poles. Through those activities, there were shared experiences between the stakeholders, like in the European Union’s stand. It was prominently represented by delegates from the European Union Delegation, the European Investment Bank (EIB), known as the EU bank, and the Erasmus+ office in Morocco. The objective aimed to benefit professionals, the general public, and especially young individuals, focusing on the theme "an alternative approach to agriculture is achievable."
There was an event, organized by International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) and Oxfam, spotlighting the resilience of women. The event showcased the power of collective efforts towards a common goal. It was a privilege for HAF to share insights about our experience in managing our psychosocial project in partnership with Project Hope and Family Literacy Program Beni Mellal-Khenifra, funded by the EU, with agriculture cooperatives aimed at empowering women. This discussion shed light on the challenges faced by women in the industry and underscored the impact of collective action in fostering resilience and driving positive change.
