As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development in Morocco, the High Atlas Foundation (HAF) is localizing access to renewable energy, including solar energy. By harnessing the power of the sun, solar energy helps to mitigate climate change, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions, whilst promoting energy security and reducing energy poverty. These small-scale projects help to decentralize renewable energy, directly impacting the communities they serve.

HAF, with the support of its partners, has facilitated the installation of 124 solar panels and solar-powered pumps, delivering potable water to fives villages - Annins, Widrarane, Tanamerte, Achahra, and Tadoula Zanifi - within the Al Haouz and Ouarzazate provinces. The availability of clean water for drinking, sanitation and hygiene benefits the entire community, some 3,700 people across the five villages. This infrastructure has proven critical in the aftermath of the September 2023 earthquake. The earthquake provided the opportunity to “build back better”, and in many cases, to realize projects that for years, if not decades, have been priorities for these communities.

Moving forward, renewable energy presents an ideal opportunity to achieve development, water, and agriculture goals in a way that is sustainable for communities to manage long-term. As part of its broader ´Clean Water´ and ´Sustainable Agriculture´ initiatives, HAF, will continue to advocate for the incorporation of renewable energy technologies in community-led development projects, working to achieve a people-centered energy transition in Morocco.
