A Week of Sustainability: Exploring and Learning
This week, we delved deeper into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to address global challenges and envision a better quality of life for all. During our activities, we brainstormed projects aligned with the SDGs, which helped me identify key issues that resonate with me. One goal that particularly stood out to me was Goal 3, “Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all ages”. Reflecting on all 17 goals shows how interconnected they are, emphasizing that progress in one area can impact other goals.
Waste management proved a critical concern. My visit to Ekomed was impactful. It was an eye-opening experience to witness the entire process of waste management. It deepened my understanding of the need for actionable steps to reduce waste in our daily lives. Small, conscious actions can lead to a healthier planet.
One of the collaborative activities involved creating SDG boxes from recycled cardboard. Each box represented a specific goal, serving as a visual reminder of our commitment to sustainability. This exercise was a reminder of the power of teamwork and how collective action can make impactful change.
Another highlight was mapping out project ideas aligned with the SDGs. This activity emphasized the importance of understanding the broader vision while focusing on actionable steps within our local communities. We outlined clear timelines, anticipated challenges, and proposed solutions to ensure our projects are realistic and impactful. It was an enlightening process that encouraged me to consider the small, actionable steps to bring my ideas to life.
A workshop on crafting natural creams and soaps introduced us to the world of aromatic and medicinal plants. We explored how herbs, vegetables, and fruits could be transformed into skincare and hair care products. The session corrected common misconceptions about natural remedies. We learned the essential rules of creating essential oils through distillation. As someone passionate about natural products, I found this experience enriching, it reaffirmed my belief in the benefits of health-conscious, sustainable choices.
We concluded the week with two activities; collecting waste for compost and engaging in carpet weaving. These tasks offered a relaxing end to the week while reinforcing sustainability principles.
