Empowering Women in the Atlas:

HAF lends its support to Empowering Women in the Atlas (EWA) in respect to their construction of a solar-powered hammam, or bath-house, that will be managed by the women of Adghag village.

About the project
This much-needed new facility will improve the sanitary, health, economic, and psychological well being of the 1,400 community members.

The social venture aims to encourage community development as well as address gender inequality.  EWA has created a women’s cooperative, the Association of Women for the Development of Adghagh, to put women at the center of decision-making.

Impact
Currently, there are no bathing facilities in the village. The solar-powered hammam will benefit approximately 1,400 men, women, and children, and will decrease local deforestation by reducing dependence on fuel wood. Furthermore, it will include an artisan center where the women will produce and sell craft items including soap and carpets.

This project was developed by Lamia Bazir in 2011 as a civic initiative. It was inspired by her encounter with the local population in a training session initiated by the High Atlas Foundation. EWA was presented at the Harvard World Model United Nations in Singapore, where it won an award for social entrepreneurship.

Please support HAF in raising $30,000 for the promotion of sustainable green development in the form of a solar- powered hammam.
